Jamboree

Monday - July 26th

Today is the first day of the Jamboree. Our Council was the first to arrive this morning at 6:00am. The youth are excitedly setting up their tents and their gateways. We even had one of our scouts receive his Eagle Scout award this evening.

We will post more updates here each day. You can see more images from our Flickr page for Subcamp 17 where our council is.

(Note - if you are at the Jamboree and have a couple nice images you have taken and want us to post them, please bring them to Ron Jones at the HQ tent. Please keep these to a minimum.

Tuesday - July 27th

The scouts were finally loosed on the Jamboree grounds today and had a chance to sample all of the festivities. The weather was nice today and the scouts have been encouraged to drink water.

See the July 27th set of one our Flickr page to get a sample of images today.

Wed - July 28th

We started the day off today mobilizing all of the troops and marching to the arena for the first main show. It was an impressive array of scouts all dressed in their uniforms and carrying their flags. Additionally we hosted an OA Crackerbarrel where we were pleased to have sectional, regional and national chiefs.

Thursday, July 29th

A bright sunny Thursday at the Jamboree began with an attempt to break the Guinness Book of World Records mark for most people trained in CPR +AED in a single day, with training going on all day at the Jamboree Arena.  NASCAR drivers Dale Earnhardt, Jr. and Jeff Gordon wowed the Scouts at the Southern Region stage.  Over 2500 lbs of canned food collected from the troops was delivered to the Food Bank of Caroline County to thank them for all their support through the many years the Jamboree has been held here.  Afternoon thunderstorms cooled the Scouts, but quickly passed.  The evening was filled with patch trading, a volleyball tournament, and visits with the international Scouts from Korea and Saudi Arabia.

Friday, July 30th

Friday began bright and early with a 6 am 5K run for the subcamp.  Nearly 10,000 runners took part in the Southern Region run, with a small number speed demons out in front, and a boatload of enthusiastic walkers rounding out the field.  Today was filled with lots of visitors, as a number of contingents enjoyed a Parents Day.  Scouts got to show their families and friends just what it’s like to live as a member of a Jamboree Troop and explore the multitude of activities that make up this historic event.  A special Wood Badge beading took place, with a member of Occoneechee Council Wood Badge SR-976 receiving his beads.  The championship of the Volleyball tournament was held, and a beautiful cool evening led to more fellowship and patch trading as Scouts and Scouters relaxed after an action-packed day.

Saturday, July 31st

Today scouters had another day of particpating in all of the various Jamboree events. At 4:35pm we mobilized our Subcamp to march to the Arena for the big show. The march took 2 hours long during which scouts got excited for the main event.

Sunday, Aug 1st

Religious services had priority this morning as Scouts of many faiths gathered in over 25 locations around the Jamboree.  A sprinkle of rain kept things quiet during the middle of the day, but the patch traders were soon back to their fevered exchanges.  The new Subcamp 17 Cell Phone recharging kiosk, assembled by our hard-working facilities group, was a hit as Troops used their assigned times to “recharge”.
