A Scout tells the truth. He is honest, and he keeps his promises. People can depend on him.
"Everything in life starts with being honest." It's more than a quote from Greensboro's Royce Reynolds. It is how he has lived his life. "The first person in your life you have to be honest with is yourself," Reynolds says reflecting on his childhood farm life in rural and his profession owning and operating car dealerships in the southeast. Quoting Shakespeare, "To thine own self be true".
Reynolds grew up on a farm in rural Tennessee, south of Nashville. The school principal,
who was also the local Scoutmaster, encouraged him to join Boy Scouts. The values, the
structure, and the achievement were a perfect fit for Reynolds. "It started me on the right
path. Knowing you could work toward goals and achieve them," remembers Reynolds.
"It meant a lot to my self worth and meant the world to me."
He credits that early blueprint for helping him earn money to for college. After serving
in the military he returned to school to earn his Masters in Business Administration. A
dealer in Birmingham, Alabama recognized something in Reynolds. He encouraged me
"to become all I was capable of becoming," Reynolds said. After successfully building a
company in Birmingham, Reynolds sold everything and started over in Greensboro. At
one time he owned the Crown Automotive Group and more than a dozen dealerships
around the Southeast. Through his life he's held true to those early established values.
"Honesty radiates through the corporation," Reynolds insists.
Owning numerous dealerships dominated his time so he wasn't able to be an active leader
in scouting. However, scouting was still emphasized in the family. His son earned the
Eagle Rank and so has his grandson. And while his schedule prevented his involvement,
he believes his professional success set him up to assist in other ways. "The door opened
for me to do something for scouting. I guess it was my attempt to pay back," Reynolds
says of donating money that allowed the Old North State Council to build a new
headquarters. Now each person who visits the council office and Scout Shop, are greeted
with the name over the door; The Royce Reynolds Family Scout Office.
